Notes:
Born in 1938 in Cairo, Egypt, Samir Sobhy (1938-2020) was both an artist keenly interested in the male form and also an integral part of the contemporary Senegalese art world. Sobhy’s early career was as a diplomat, traveling between Egypt, New York, and Senegal. This travel allowed him to develop his skills as an artist, learning his craft in Cairo University and the Art Students League in New York. After retiring from his diplomatic career, Sobhy would pursue art in earnest in Senegal. In 1992, Sobhy would serve as a founding member for the first art biennale in the African continent, Dak’Art- Biennale de l'Art Africain Contemporain, acting as the jury president. Sobhy engaged with the male form through a variety of themes, from erotic couplings to more heady explorations of Egyptian history and West African male sorcerers.
This work is a deftly executed oil painting on gesso, applied to a March 11, 1995 issue of the Senegalese newspaper, Sud Quotidien. This painting demonstrates Sobhy’s inclination towards vibrant colors and unconventional mediums, while also showcasing the artist’s thematic interest in the passions of young men and same-sex desire as its own form of sorcery.
