'Demonstration Study' Oil on canvas. 18 x 16 inches. Framed. Provenance: Trinity Auctions, Conn., 2008; Estate of Lenora Robbins. The sitter is believed to be Lenora Robbins who was both a student of Henri's and his monitor and class manager. This was likely a demonstration portrait that was re-stretched subsequently, on a modern stretcher, with evidence of the original tack holes. A Lenora Robbins self-portrait was sold at the Trinity 2008 auction, wearing the same outfit and with 'displeasure' brush strokes canceling out her work and suggesting the reason for this demonstration portrait and which remained in her collection. For further reference see: Smithsonian American Art Museum (Robert Henri) online archive, image of Henri with his students and what appears to be the class manager, bottom center below Henri, holding an instruction board, and who resembles the sitter in this portrait.
