Notes:

Joseph Radoccia (b. 1961) is an American contemporary artist whose practice centers on portraiture, the male figure, and LGBTQ+ identity. Radoccia was born in upstate New York and was raised in the city of Buffalo. He studied graphic design at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he earned a bachelor’s degree (1982) and later MFA in painting (1985).

In the late 1980s, he relocated to Brooklyn to pursue his career as a professional artist. Radoccia’s work during this time focused intensely on intimate relationships, desire, loss and the emotional realities facing the LGBTQ community, particularly during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 90s. During that same period, he branched into sculpture and oil painting to explore fear, intimacy, and the expression of sexuality.

Radoccia’s works have been exhibited at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester, the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in association with the Smithsonian Institution, the State University of New York, and the Ethan Cohen Gallery in New York City. His work is also held in many private and institutional collections, including the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and the Gerald Mead Collection.
