'Animal Litter Study.' 24 1/4 x 18 inches. Monogramed.
Note: Breitmeier was a German illustrator and painter, principally of animals, and was published in numerous books and magazines. Before WWII he lived and worked in Guben. After the war Breitmeier lived in GDR territory, in Bernau, where all art production was under the control of the East German Communist Party (SED). This drawing, as well as others from this period in the former collection of the NECCA, are expressionistic, an approach often not tolerated by the SED which prized realism and art that conformed with Socialist rhetoric, though perhaps the depictions of animals made them acceptable. This drawing was likely done at one of the GDR zoos. Provenance: Ex Collection New England Center for Contemporary Art.
