'Monkeys (Baboons).' Gouache on paper. Artist monogram lower right. 29 x 27 inches (overall). Framed.
Note: Breitmeier was a German illustrator and painter, principally of animals, and was published in numerous books and magazines. Before WWII he lived and worked in Guben. After the war Breitmeier lived in GDR territory, in Bernau, where all art production was under the control of the East German Communist Party (SED). This drawing, as well as others from this period, are expressionistic, an approach often not tolerated by the SED which prized realism and art that conformed with Socialist rhetoric, though perhaps the depictions of animals made them acceptable. Provenance: Ex Collection New England Center for Contemporary Art.
