Notes:
Jan Lynch (1951–1996) was a Byzantine Catholic priest turned gay activist and photographer based in Knoxville, Tennessee. After his formal studies in Rome, Lynch was ordained in the Ukrainian Byzantine Rite, serving in Toronto and Windsor, Canada from 1977–1979 before his return to Knoxville. During the height of the 1980’s AIDS crisis, Lynch became an integral part of Knoxville’s gay community, both as an artist and activist. Lynch was known for his spontaneous nudes and glamorous portraits of drag queens, and his work forms a vital record of gay life, art, and activism in Knoxville.
