Known for his intimate male portraiture, Jack Pierson's work explores themes of intimacy, longing, youth, and nostalgia, often set against the backdrop of the gay communities of New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami. While studying at the Massachusetts College of Art, he became closely involved with the Boston School of photographers, a group which included artists such as Nan Goldin, Mark Morrisroe, David Armstrong, and Taboo!.

This work, titled Amagansett after the quaint Long Island hamlet, was part of a series of landmark sales of art and fashion from Elton John’s Atlanta estate on Peachtree Road, from which his 27th studio album derives its name. An emblematic example of Elton John’s passion for photography, a sentimental inscription on the back of the work credits it as a gift for the musician's 60th birthday.
