"7 ft hanging wall case." 1969. "7 ft." refers to the cabinet. The wood top is approximately 108" (sight). The basis for this wall case design is pictured in George Nakashima's 1966 studio catalog. 19 x 20 x 108" (sight).
This lot includes Marion Nakashima's original correspondence regarding this wall case. Marion Nakashima wrote to the client, Irving Taylor, who requested a wall cabinet that, despite Nakashima's increasingly busy schedule, "I am squeezing a 7 ft. wall case, a walnut free edge front, sap on free edge only, overhang right as you face it, vertical grilled doors back with grass cloth..." Also included with the lot are the original hanging instructions with lag fasteners and backing boards. Provenance: Estate of Irving Taylor (Rhode Island).
Irving (Sandy) Taylor was a renowned regional architect. He was a graduate of Tabor Academy, before attending Brown University in 1951 and the Rhode Island School of Design in 1960. He was a champion of historic preservation, and his social circle was contemporary artists, craftspeople, and musicians. He is also a direct descendant of Charles Wilson Peale. His nickname, Sandy as he was known, was given to him by the artist Gordon Grant, who was his neighbor.
NOTE: The supporting wood saw horses are not part of the piece but were used for photography and are not included with the lot.
