An M.J. Whithall Associates runner rug. 

Early 20th century.

An early example of a machine made runner, manufactured by M.J. Whithall Associates of Worcester, Massachuestts. Featuring a black field, with floral and botanic ribbon border. This rug and its counterpart have been notched along the edges to fit furniture and doorways.

This hall runner is original to the Newport, Rhode
Island estate "Hopedene", which was built in 1902 by Peabody & Stearns for Elizabeth Hope Gammell Slater.

The floral ribbon border matches the border of the rug that can be seen in Mrs. Slater’s salon at Hopedene, in a photograph of the room in Barr Ferree’s American Estates and Gardens (1906). This runner and its counterpart may have been placed in a nearby hallway.

Charles and Amy Paterson purchased Hopedene with some of its furnishings in 1958, and donated these to the Preservation Society of Newport in 1972.

Notched for furniture placement, with condition and wear being consistent with age and use.
