"Priscilla and John Alden." Watercolor on board after Alfred Fredericks (American, 1853 - 1926). Described on mat. No signature found. 18 x 13 1/2" (sight); 29 x 24 1/2" (overall). Framed.
Priscilla Alden (Priscilla Mullins) and John Alden lived in the Plymouth Colony in the late 17th century and are notable for being included in the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem from 1858, "The Courtship of Miles Standish" detailing the romance between Priscilla and ship captain Miles Standish in a fictionalized dramatization of documented events in the colony.
Provenance: a private Rhode Island collection.
Condition
Toning throughout and slight fading consistent with age. Frame has small scuffs and areas of loss. Work unframed for inspection. Painting laid down in mat.
