Photographer's stamp on the verso of each image, "Sonatinas, Four Feet; Alair Gomes"; Numbered in ink on the verso of each image, "27-(1-17); Edition No. 1".

A complete suite of seventeen (17) photographs from Alair Gomes' legendary Sonatinas series. Only one other edition of Suite No.27 is held in the National Library of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. The academic, art critic, and photographer Alair Gomes was best known for his extensive body of work devoted to the male form. His Sonatinas series of works feature photos taken from the window of his apartment, charting the life and times of the beach-bodied men of Rio. His Sonatinas are presented in suites, displayed in museums and galleries as long, sequenced displays that form "visual music" as the viewer walks along them. Gomes' work has been exhibited across the world, in institutions such as LACMA, MoMA, the Getty Museum, and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and it is now housed in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, and the National Library of Brazil.

[1] Lawrence Christy III was a literature professor and close friend of Alair Gomes. These photographs were gifted to Christy III after the Exposição As artes no Shopping exhibition in Rio, Brazil in 1980. Christy III was also second-in-line for the estate of Gomes as per the artist's will, but had already passed away before the execution of Gomes' estate. (See Santos, p. 239.)
