Our Fine Art & Design Summer 2026 auction features property from The Preservation Society of Newport County deaccessioned and formerly in situ for decades and original to several of the most celebrated Newport mansions. Previously unseen original artworks and antiques and art from the estate of renowned marine artist John Mecray, alongside a selection of antique to contemporary prints, paintings, decor, sterling silver wares, and a range of vintage and antique rugs from historic Newport and other Rhode Island estates.

A flat woven 19th century Aubusson rug in pink and beige with floral motif.

This rug has been displayed in Mrs. Sarah Berwind’s bedroom at "The Elms" mansion of Newport, Rhode Island.

It may previously have furnished Charles and Amy Paterson’s Newport estate, "Hopedene", who donated this rug to the Preservation Society of Newport county in 1972 after they acquired the mansion.

184 x 205 1/2" (overall).

The inner portion of the rug that houses the floral medallion measures 149 x 123" approximately. 

 

Condition

The trim on the left hand side has separated at the middle, the rug has been repaired many times and shows general heavy wear consistent with age and use.
