Four (4) engravings depicting "La Chevalie d'Eon" Charlotte d'Eon de Beaumont (French, 1728 - 1810) and one (1) early book describing intersex bodies circa the 19th century. Including: Jacques Duval (French, 16th Century) "Traites des Hermaphrodits." Victorian edition. Hardcover.

Jacques Duval was an influential and forward-thinking surgeon in the 16th century, whose writings and research on intersex saved a person from being burned at the stake for witchcraft. His writings were largely destroyed due to their controversial nature. Source: Foldvari Books' description of their rare 17th-century printing of the text.

Four (4) antique engravings from the late 19th or early 20th century, likely taken from books. Largest: 10 3/4" x 7"

Widely regarded by contemporary scholarship to be an early transgender pioneer in the 18th century, the Chevalier d'Eon served the French military and Louis XV as a spy, soldier, and diplomat, presenting alternately as a man and woman as part of an espionage campaign to infiltrate the royal court of Russia. Louis XVI would then formally recognize her as a woman and grant her a stipend for her service until the dissolving of the French monarchy due to the French Revolution. Source: Atlas Obscura. "The Incredible Chevalier d'Eon, Who Left France as a Male Spy and Returned as a Christian Woman."
