"Hudson River - The View Near Anthony's Nose (Hudson Highlands)".' Oil on canvas. 21 1/2 x 29"; 27 1/2 x 35" (framed).
It has never been confirmed that de Grailly visited America. What is known is that he worked mainly by adapting engravings of American landscapes into paintings; these paintings were sought after and exhibited at the Paris Salon. In this variant of the painting a single bird appears in the upper left and the sun light illuminates the Hudson Highlands.
Provenance: Gertrude Grace Sill (1920–2020) was an American art historian, curator, professor, and author of "John Haberle Master of Illusion," among other art historical publications.
