"Achilles and Patroclus." Black pencil, oil, and gold leaf on board. Signed on the bottom right. 40 x 27".

Exhibitions: Dowling College, "Mythos, Pathos, Thanatos: Figurative Work by Sonia Melara." March 2004.

Literature: "Mythos, Pathos, Thanatos," Sonia Melara 2004, illustrated on page 7.

"In this mixed-media work, the youthful and muscular Achilles stands in a bold, assertive posture above the equally robust but seated Patroclus. Retaining the ancient Greek tradition of heroic nudity, Ms. Melara has depicted both men without drapery of any sort. The spear, which Achilles holds erect in his left hand, is the only visual hint of their identity as soldiers in the war waged between Greece and Troy. This is because our artist chose not to represent them in a predictable episodic manner but rather in a more intimate moment in the narrative—one that bespeaks of their homoerotic relationship. (Footnote: For inferences about the homoerotic relationship between the two, see K.J. Dover, Greek Homosexuality (New York: MJF Books, 1989). See also Archilles' Lamentation over Patroculus' dead body in Aeschylus' Myrmidones, as well as a homoerotic characterization of their relationship in Plato's Symposium."). Condition

Every lot is sold "as is," "where is," and "without warranty," whether express or implied. Art has not been examined outside of the frame unless otherwise stated.

Our auction items are antique and vintage, often from estates, and are not in perfect condition. They often show normal signs of age, use, and wear, which might not be specified in a condition report. Bidders are responsible for determining the physical condition of items prior to bidding. The absence of a condition report does not indicate the absence of condition issues with the lot. Requests for condition reports, additional photographs, or a video inspection can be obtained via email at: info@Vallots.com (any condition statement given is offered as an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact).

All bids are final. We do not offer refunds based on item description, condition, or any other reason.
