Circa 1940. Signed lower right. Oil on burlap. 20 3/16 x 24 inches. 27 x 30 3/4 inches (overall). Framed. This important painting dates to the beginning of Abstract Expressionism. It was painted at a time when Schnitzler was sharing studio space with Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning. It is unique in its gestures from the other Abstract Expressionists and anticipates much later approaches to Abstract Expressionism. A very similar example to this painting is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. See, Whitney Museum, Assession Number: 60.52, for reference.
