"Edge of Night." 1988. Oil on prepared canvas. Signed, titled and dated on back. 48 x 36 inches. Literature: Kostabi: The Early Years, 1990, Masterworks, page 377.
Provenance: Christies New York, October 4, 1989, Contemporary Painting; private collection, Rhode Island.
Note: This painting was vandalized (slashed) by another "artist" during an exhibition. The canvas was scratched but not cut through. The damage area was subsequently restored at Kostabi World, Soho (circa 1993), though the incised mark "WYZ", approximately 2 x 2 inches, is visible under raking light below the figure in the black field and two hair thin lines, approximately 3 inches each, appears across the shoulder and thigh of the central figure.
Condition
Please note the description when considering the condition and in addition there are a few minor abrasions to the painted sides of the canvas and a few minor marks. One small inch of loss at top. 1" area craquelure in blue field, a few dull spots in the prepared field not detracting from overall appearance. Despite its history the painting shows very well and the prior damage is not readily apparent. (Please note, this is not a full condition report. Please email us at: info@Vallots.com for a detailed condition report or for additional photographs. Every lot is sold as-is.)
