"Brothers Lissard." Ink on paper. 17 1/2 x 11 3/4". Provenance: Ambrose DuBek collection; acquired from the estate by the present consignor.

DuBek was a celebrated gay art collector. The majority of his gay art and ephemera collection was pre-Stonewall, and is now in the GLBT Historical Society, SF, Dubek's collection is featured in the book: "Lust Unearthed: Vintage Gay Graphics from the DuBeck Collection" by Thomas Waugh. This work was appraised in the original collection but it was sold privately by the executor soon after DuBek's death.

James Reynolds was an Irish American artist whose watercolors often depicted handsome young men. We speculate this original artwork was reproduced as a series for mail order or publication. As Waugh wrote: "...most of the obscene artwork circulating in the pre-Stonewall underground did so in small photographic copies of original drawings, paintings or graphics, for technological, logistical, and economic reasons - but also out of strategic and political necessity."
