'The Reclining Figure.' Etching (possibly with aquatint). 17 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches. signed and dated 1970 in pencil. framed 28 x 33 inches. Edition 20. (The figure appears posed in a studio space with views through a window of a New Mexican landscape).

Cohoe was born on the Navajo Reservation in Tocito, New Mexico. Depictions of male nudes are not common in his oeuvre and very scarce to find in Native American art from his time. This can be explained by the homophobia that was brought into Native American culture through Christianization and the related systemic forces like the residential-industrial school system, anti-culture laws of the 19th-20th centuries such as the Canadian Potlatch law, and the poverty that resulted from these systemic forces, all of which worked against Native American creative pursuits and self-expression.

Every lot is sold "as is," "where is," and "without warranty," whether express or implied. Lighting and electronics have not been tested and should be professionally evaluated prior to use. Art has not been examined outside of the frame unless otherwise stated.

Our auction items are antique and vintage, often from estates, and are not in perfect condition. They often show normal signs of age, use, and wear, which might not be specified in a condition report. Bidders are responsible for determining the physical condition of items prior to bidding. The absence of a condition report does not indicate the absence of condition issues with the lot. Requests for condition reports, additional photographs, or a video inspection can be obtained via email at: info@vallots.com (any condition statement given is offered as an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact).

All bids are final. We do not offer refunds based on item description, condition, or for any other reason.
