Notes:

A portrait of Jack Fontan by the American photographer George Platt Lynes. Beginning his career in the 1930s, Lynes had initially taken up photography with the intent to document his close circle of friends, including famous artists, novelists, and tastemakers such as Jean Cocteau, Gertrude Stein, Glenway Wescott, and Monroe Wheeler. However, he would quickly make a name for himself as an inimitable portrait photographer, and his work began to feature in publications like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Lynes's photographic work throughout the mid-1930s-1940s consisted of both commercial portraits of dancers and actors as well as an extensive body of male nude portraiture. The majority of his homoerotic work would later be donated to the Kinsey Institute, shortly before Lynes's death in 1955.
