Renowned in Bolivia, Barrera studied at the Academia de Bellas Artes in La Paz and was a part of the Los Beneméritos de la Utopía movement. His vocal stance against the Bolivian government dictatorship led to him being imprisoned before his ultimate exile to Switzerland, where he continued his career as an artist.
