"phil and dan." 1969. Serigraph. Signed in the bottom right. 22 1/2 x 11 3/4"; 24 x 13" (overall). Catalog Raisonne: CAC 69-74. Provenance: Estate of a Manhattan art collector.

From 1968 to 1969, Corita Kent created a series of 29 prints that she identified as “a set of heroes and sheroes.” The instant work uses an image of the Catholic priests and advocates for social justice Philip and Daniel Berrigan and the writings of civil rights lawyer William Kunstler and specifically their non-violent war protest of 1968.

The image is of the Berrigans both Jesuit priests, who would later became known as the Catonsville Nine when they walked into the offices of the local draft board in Catonsville, Maryland, removed 600 draft records, doused them in napalm and burnt them in a lot outside of the building."

The Catonsville Nine, who were all Catholics, issued a statement:

" 'We confront the Roman Catholic Church, other Christian bodies, and the synagogues of America with their silence and cowardice in the face of our country's crimes. We are convinced that the religious bureaucracy in this country is racist, is an accomplice in this war, and is hostile to the poor.' " Wikipedia.

Both Berrigans were imprisoned repeatedly for their social justice actions; Dan Berrigan was on the FBI's Most Wanted list, and Phil Berrigan was excommunicated from the Catholic Church, though subsequently he was reinstated. Sister Corita Kent herself took a risk when she chose to immortalize the two brothers in the instant work in 1969.
