Cell 16 (Boston). Photo-offset. (framed demonstration posters). 11 x 17"; 12 x 18" (framed).

Founded in 1968, Cell 16 was one of the earliest radical feminist organizations based in Boston. Cell 16 envisioned women's liberation through separatism from men, celibacy, communal living and, in particular, self-defense training. Cell 16 opened their own martial arts studio to offer Tae Kwon Do and karate classes to their members. Original members of the organization, Abby Rockefeller and Jayne West, are shown here sparring for the poster promoting Cell 16's self-defense program. Provenance: Peter Gillis, Boston teacher, inn keeper, activist, archivist and collector. Gillis was close to several members of Cell 16 (Abby Rockefeller, also an ardent environmentalist, single-handedly installed a Clivus Multrum in Gillis' Roxbury townhouse).
