Spreeschiffer.' Oil on canvas. Signed bottom left. 23 x 29".
There are two other known variants of this painting recorded in Dr Andreas Schroyen's catalog raisonne on the work of Arthur Kampf. These paintings are recorded as: G1902/V and G1941/XII. In this third variant, where the two men in the foreground push against the currents of the river Spree in Berlin, the man in the background leans behind a stack of bricks to make a repair; in this variant the brick stack has been reduced and a single brick is in left position to be taken off the stack and placed quickly.
Starting in 1898 Kampf was working at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. It is then that he must have encountered this scene on the river Spree of repairmen struggling against the current while making a repair. Kampf may have sketched the scene and then returned to it when creating this painting and the other two or possibly worked from distinct sketches of the same scene. The scene and composition may have been popular with Kampf's patrons and this may also be why he returned to it over a period of years.
Vallot Auctioneers would like to thank Dr. Andreas Schroyen for his art historical expertise and assistance in our cataloging this recently discovered painting.
